The Idea

Hey folks. This is my first blog ever, so I don't plan to transcend any boundaries or save the world. What I want to do is create a record of my progress that may guilt me into actually finishing this project. What am I talking about, you* ask? In January 2009, I will be attending PDXLAN 13 in Portland, Oregon. One of its high-profile contests is for PC case mods, with a cash prize of $1500 and an appearance on the front page of some nerdy magazine. There is only one rule: the mod must be something that can be "gamed on". Hehehe.

If I'm going to do this, I want to do it right. It must be an expertly detailed, grandiose mod that the judges will give the time of day. I want something that will impress, while still being cheap and practical in design. I've always loved futuristic styling and architecture, and the one structure that always set off my imagination was the Launch Arcology from Simcity 2000. You know what I'm talking about. It would provide me with many aesthetic and technical challenges, while letting my creativity run wild.

I have 4 1/2 months until the event, so this is truly still in the planning-slash-is-this-even-freakin-possible stage. One of my main concerns is where to find the perfect dome for the top. Today, I collected some bits and pieces of computer hardware from Olygeek that may adorn the structure. But I still have many sketches to draft before I can even begin to worry about details. I am still deciding whether or not to turn this into a PC powerhouse or simply a rig that can run Simcity 2000. The latter would be funnier.

The exodus has begun!
